THERE are fewer and fewer old school butchers with links out to farming communities, but Barretts carries a flag and a few modern touches like rotisserie chickens in the morning. England’s Lane is like a stripe through an odd union jack, south of Belsize Park, north of Primrose Hill, just above what they call Steelers Village. A neighbourhood to itself. Family run for more than 100 years, the (very elementary) web site even features the butcher’s boy on the cart arriving from the market. It is more a shop to visit in person. Quality, range and prices are competitive against more boutique outlets. Beef is from Scotland, lamb from the west country, there may even be fresh grouse in season.
