There are tomatoes and tomatoes – the Greeks even have another word for it – nmotata, pronounced like no matter. It is all to do with sunshine. As one of the most southerly points of the nation, the Isle of White gets more sunshine than everywhere else. And produces its own varieties like the chocolate Marmonde, the Coueur de Bouef, Kamatao and the San Arretino – which is a joke, Paul Thomas’s farm is in the Arreton Valley (main road). It is all biodegradable, grown in coconut husks which are recycled, like oyster shells. They are a feature at many farmers markets, but also occasional grocers like Harrods, and Budgens. They also do a very good passata.
