La Plaza

Hola, hola Spanish groceries here

La Plaza

Almost the last shop on Portobello Road, a position held by a rather good linen shop next door. Less known than the Portuguese Lisboa round the corner, is this rival Spanish deli that stocks 1906 strong beer, apple and strawberry cider and other things that Sainsbury’s has never heard of. It is like the whole of La Mancha has been poured into four walls. There is a  www.streetrunner.uk service for local delivery. Notable for its Spanish wines. Also for value. And of course Serrano hams. Sandwiches are made fresh, good cheeses and all the condiments for paella. Friendly (it is by the Spanish school). “a little bastion of pre-gentrification / touristification Portobello.”  Much appreciated by local Sopanish. No web site, they are friendly, they want to see you.

The murals outside the Spanish school – scroll right to see the pictures –  may look like they were drawn by the pupils but in fact they were a commission for Fiona Hawthorne who among other credits, has a portrait of Barack Obama in the White House.
